Samsung unveils slimmest ever 8mp camera phone

Samsung has released a taster of its second 8mp camera phone, the Pixon, which will be available in the UK from the end of October.

The release is likely to irritate LG, which recently claimed the title of slimmest eight-megapixel camera phone. At only 13.8mm thick, the Pixon shaves off 0.15mm off the LG KC910. Like its LG competitor, the Pixon also sports a large touch-screen.

The device will be formally unveiled on Monday.

Here is the full Samsung Pixon spec list:

  • Eight-megapixel camera with auto-focus
  • 3.2-inch full touch-screen
  • 13.8mm thin
  • 16x Zoom, Dual Power LED Flash
  • Face Detection
  • Smile Shot
  • ASR (Advanced Shake Reduction)
  • WDR (Wide Dynamic Range)
  • Photo Browser (Accelerometer Sensor)
  • High Speed Video Capture and Playback
  • HSDPA Quad-Band 7.2Mbps connectivity
  • Online Widget for easy access to frequently used functions
  • Samsung M8800 (Samsung Bresson / Samsung Pixon) Update

    Expected Q4 2008
    27th September 2008

We're still waiting on the official word from Samsung about the M8800 we previewed a few days ago, and Samsung still haven't released any photographs of the new device.. although we believe that the mockup on the right is very close to the final design.

We do have pretty detailed specifications of the new device, and the bad news is that it doesn't have a WVGA display that we had hoped for, just a 3.2" 240 x 400 pixel touch-sensitive panel in 16 million colours similar to that in the Samsung Omnia.

We can confirm that the M8800 has an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and autofocus, it also reportedly has VGA resolution video capture and image stabilisation.

This is a 3.5G device with support for HSDPA high-speed data but no WiFi. The Samsung M8800 does appear to have a GPS receiver too, although the exact capabilities of this are not known. Other hardware features are microSD expandable memory, Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0 and an FM radio.

We can also tell you that the Samsung M8800 supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, e-AAC+, WMA, 3GP, ASF, WMV and MPEG4 audio and video formats, it comes with an email client, web browser, RSS reader and document viewer.

The M8800 weighs 122 grams and measures 108 x 54 x 14mm (compare this with 112 x 57 x 13mm for the Omnia). The 1000 mAh battery provides up to 7 hours of talktime and 16 days standby time.

As sometimes happens with Samsung products, it will looks like it will be marketed under different names in different regions, possibly the "Samsung Bresson" in the UK, but also the "Samsung Pixon" in some other countries. The exact launch date is not known at present, but we think that full details should be announced in the next couple of weeks.

Latest News on the BlackBerry 9500, AKA Thunder

A lot of new developments have occurred in the past day or so regarding the BlackBerry 9500 Thunder, so I thought it would be a good idea to wait a bit to give you a consolidated post. And boy is this news fascinating and well worth a read.

Kevin at CrackBerry reported yesterday that the Thunder will feature haptic feedback (a vibration or buzz from the screen and an audible noise) and the ability to emulate your choice of QWERTY or SureType keypads depending on whether not the phone is being help vertically or horizontally. Haptic technology is not new in the cell phone industry, but it has recently become more popular with the release of many LG touchscreen devices, such as the Voyager and Dare.

Unfortunately for us BlackBerry nerds who want to try this device out ASAP, not long after the above was posted on CrackBerry, the Boy Genius reported that the Thunder is a long way from production as there are major issues with, amongst other things, the screen which serves as the device’s keypad.

Citing a reliable RIM employee as an informant, this is what the Boy Genius went on to post:

“Thunder is in no way shape or form market-ready. If Bold was any indication, Thunder won’t be ready for at least another 4-5 months.” Our source goes on to tell us that the keyboard is incredibly annoying to type on, and the screen actually shows ripples even when pressed ever-so-lightly. There is an accelerometer in here, but it goes “bonkers” when the device is moved. In its current state, the UI blinks and lags when you try to scroll, and for every key press, you have to wait half a second until you get a response. Our guy, when talking about haptic feedback, said that the screen “clicks.” We were informed there are “buttons” on each corner, so when you press the screen, you might feel one click, two clicks, or four simultaneously. We’re told these four independant buttons actually press, so you do “click” the screen. RIM implemented a touch-and-drag approach which is the only way to select on screen buttons at this point. We were also told this was the latest build of the software, and to quote him, “Most of the people who have handled it thinks it’s a joke.”

Although the reputation of Boy Genius is of a very high standard, he has been nearly pinpoint accurate over the last few months with regards to BlackBerry. If there is one saving grace is the mention of November as a likely release target.

Don’t forget to keep checking BlackBerryNews for all of the latest Thunder developments.

    Nokia to unveil touch-screen phone

HELSINKI (Reuters) - The world's top cellphone maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE) will unveil its first touch-screen phone at a media and analyst event in London next week, two industry sources told Reuters on Friday.

Smaller handset vendors --(066570.KS), (O) and (005930.KS) -- have rolled out numerous popular touch-screen phones over the last two years.

Both sources said Nokia was set to unveil the phone, codenamed "Tube," on Oct 2. A Nokia spokeswoman declined to comment.

"The phone is extremely important. We have been waiting for the market leader to respond to iPhone for a year and a half now. There is a lot of pressure on Nokia," said Carolina Milanesi, analyst at Gartner.

Nokia said in July it would introduce its first touch-screen phone this year, and would sell it more cheaply than rival touch-screen models in order to tap into a higher-volume market.

"The demand outlook in emerging markets, like India, is good for a cheaper touch-screen phone," said Hannu Rauhala, an analyst with Pohjola Bank.

Kai Oistamo, head of Nokia's devices business, said in July the Finnish firm was fully committed to bringing a complete portfolio of touch devices to the market, both in the high-end and low-end segments.

T-Mobile G1 with Google Android officially announced

T-Mobile USA has officially confirmed what unofficially has been the talk of the town--the debut of the first Google Android based mobile phone. The T-Mobile G1 is made by HTC (the device was code named the HTC Dream) and was introduced this morning at a press conference in NYC. While this is the first Android device to be announced there should be many more following. The G1 is a T-Mobile exclusive (both USA and Europe).

Specs and features of the G1 include:

  • Quad-band GSM / Dual band 3G / EDGE / Wifi
  • Touch screen with iPhone like dragging
  • Slide out QWERTY keyboard
  • 3 megapixel camera with auto-focus
  • Amazon MP3 store app to download DRM-free songs over WiFi
  • Multi-tasking
  • IM (Yahoo/MSN/AIM/Google Talk)
  • Google Maps with street view
  • HTML email client (POP3 and IMAP) plus contact and calendar syncing for Gmail users
  • Web browser using WebKit

  • The G1 will retail for $179 with a 2-year contract when it starts shipping on October 22nd. Current customers can order online and the G1 will be delivered when it's launched. Like the iPhone, the G1's service agreement requires a data plan. Unlimited data with 400 messages runs $25 monthly while unlimited data and unlimited messaging will cost $35 monthly. Since it's a 3G device the phone will only be made available in T-Mobile's current 3G markets. You can use T-Mobile USA'coverage search tool to find out if your area is 3G or not, though the number of markets should be expanding rapidly. The G1 will not be available without a contract or via pre-paid service.
